Veteran Iranian filmmaker and screenwriter Alireza Davoudnejad was awarded a First-Class Artistic Certificate at a ceremony held at the Seifollah Dad Hall of the Iranian Cinema Organization, where leading filmmakers, artists, and cinema officials paid tribute to his more than five decades of work in Iranian cinema.
Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabaeinejad, deputy for evaluation and supervision at the Iranian Cinema Organization, described Davoudnejad as a filmmaker whose entire life has been intertwined with cinema.
“Davoudnejad is the first person who comes to mind when we think of someone for whom cinema is not simply a profession, but a way of life,” he said, adding that honoring Davoudnejad was itself an honor for the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and the Iranian Cinema Organization.
Homayoun Asadian, managing director of the Iranian House of Cinema, described himself as one of Davoudnejad’s students and praised his courage and enduring spirit of experimentation.
Film critic Masoud Farasati called Davoudnejad “one of the distinguished figures of post-Revolution Iranian cinema” and “part of the history of Iranian cinema,” highlighting Niaz as one of the filmmaker’s most significant works.
Producer Manouchehr Shahsavari also praised Davoudnejad’s lifelong devotion to cinema, while several other filmmakers and colleagues reflected on his influence, experimental approach, and ability to discover new talent.
Raed Faridzadeh, president of the Iranian Cinema Organization, said experimentation has been one of the defining characteristics of Davoudnejad’s filmmaking.
“An experimental filmmaker is not merely a product of his time; he challenges his time,” Faridzadeh said. “Davoudnejad has followed this approach throughout his career, creating works closely connected to the social realities of their time.”
Faridzadeh also highlighted the central role of family and lived experience in Davoudnejad’s films, noting that the filmmaker often extended his personal experiences into his work and involved members of his own family in exploring and documenting life through cinema.
Addressing the ceremony, Davoudnejad reflected on the challenges facing Iranian cinema and the changing audiovisual environment.
“Our world is increasingly becoming a world of light and sound,” he said, emphasizing that cinema can remain credible and meaningful only when it maintains a genuine connection with life and represents filmmakers’ lived experiences.
He also stressed the need for greater attention to research, education, fewer complicated restrictions, and greater market security to ensure the sustainable development of Iranian cinema.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Davoudnejad received the First-Class Artistic Certificate in recognition of his decades-long contribution to Iranian cinema.
The award was presented in the presence of Raed Faridzadeh, Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabaeinejad, Homayoun Asadian, Manouchehr Shahsavari, Abolhassan Davoudi, Manouchehr Mohammadi, and other prominent members of Iran’s film community.
Other attendees at the ceremony included Alireza Hosseini, Seyyed Maziar Hashemi, Mohammad Ali Hosseinnezhad, Alireza Esmaeili, Mohammad Reza Faraji, Mohammad Tayyeb, Seyyed Hojjat Tabatabaei, Masoud Najafi, Mohammad Hamidi Moghadam, Mojtaba Behzadian, Nosratollah Tabesh, and Bahman Habashi.
